Moving forward with the coconut oil project...
Here's where we are.
Today we received another huge delivery. This is amazing and we are so proud of the community for getting us passed the first phase of the project.
🌍 Travel has connected all of us but the world became a lot smaller as borders closed due to the connection of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you know Marty and I, you'll know that we went on vacation to Panama over 6 years ago and fell in love with this amazing island full of happy people. We thought we would stay for 6 months and get involved with building boutique hotels that gave indigenous communities jobs. To cut a long story short, 6 months turned into 6+ years and the way of life on this little island always pulls us back.
When the global pandemic broke out, the immediate plan was to help provide basic needs for the communities here like food and supplies. When the boat was about to leave for the delivery of supplies, I ran back to the hotel to stock up on soap to give the communities for their protection.
Soap-making for the hotel had become a hobby craft of ours over the last 4 years, and simple soap was one of the main things reported to stop the virus.
Then I thought about something as basic as washing your hands to protect you and your loved ones. It's a simple idea which carries so much weight.
But what if you don’t have soap?
That is one of the harsh realities of life for these communities. This is certainly an overlooked issue. What if you don't have soap or running water?
We can protect ourselves with masks and by keeping a distance of 6 feet from others, but what if your home is a roof in the jungle and a you're part of a community that cannot survive if it doesn't work together?
Could the answer be as simple as soap?
Could stopping the virus be as easy as keeping your hands clean? This could be a simple solution.
This is not just a solution to the problems faced during this pandemic today. This presents a solution to a problem that can help communities long after we have defeated the COVID-19 Virus. We could help these communities by just providing soap that is a product from their natural environment and make soap a way of life and a source of income.
Could the answer be as simple as soap?
With that answer, not only can we create a business that is socially responsible, but we can empower the communities to make use of the handicraft skills that they already possess. These communities know how to harvest and provide the pure ingredients needed for the soaps, and their skills will create another source of jobs beyond tourism. We've all heard the age-old saying:
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
This means that in the long run, it can be more beneficial to show a person how to do something than to do something for them.
With this in mind, welcome to our community of Salt Creek Soaps.
By the weekend we'll be launching a website where people will be able to buy the soaps directly.
Every purchase of this soap will be a springboard for the community. When you buy, we give. ❤️❤️❤️
Keep following along. We cannot wait to showcase the products that are inspired by this beautiful community.
